Prelude “There Is A Land Of Love”     Stephen Foster -- SJUCC Choir

Welcome & Announcements

*Call to Worship

One: God calls to us.

All: We’re reluctant.

One: God calls to us.

All: We doubt our ability.

One: God calls to us.

All: We just aren’t sure.

One: God calls to us and equips us to serve.

All: We’re here, Lord. We’re ready (Jeremiah 1)

*Opening Hymn     “Here I am, Lord(See Insert)

Litany: The Gift of Love

One: If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love,

All: I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love,

One: I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love,

All:I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude.

One: Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth.

All: Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

One: Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.

All:  When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.   (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)

January 13, 2013 The Baptism of Jesus

Prelude

Welcome & Announcements

*Call to Worship

One: The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. All: Day to day pours forth speech,  and night to night declares knowledge. One: There is no speech, nor are there words;  their voice is not heard; All: yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world… One: Let the words of my mouth,

All: and the meditation of my heart  be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (Psalm 119:1-4; 14)

*Opening Hymn                                    “I Am The Light”

*Invocation (unison)

God of grace, we start each new year and each new day with the promise to follow ever more faithfully in the footsteps of your Son. From the birth of love in Bethlehem we journey to Jordan and stand on the banks of the river. Let the coolness of the water refresh and restore us. As we stand on the banks of the river, O God, give us the strength to release into the swirling waters those things that separate us from you. And in these moments of stillness, may we hear the voice of Jesus calling to us: "This is my beloved; with you I am well pleased." Amen.
